‘The Winged Victory of Samothrace’ — Do you know what the goddess of victory is called? She is called Nike and it is this goddess that is displayed in this 2.75metre tall statue. Other than being one of the most beautiful sculptures in Louvre which displays smaller things like moist clothes sticking to her body (the effect is shown on marble!!!), it also has a reference to the symbol of the sportswear company Nike. Not only was the name derived from the goddess but it is said that this sculpture inspired its logo. Currently, the hands and face of the sculpture are missing, but had the same been there, it would have created a tick from the head to the arm, a ‘swoosh’.
